Beside The Point

I made a stealing in my time
An inmate said in the joint
It’s a lot better than working, he said
Do you get my point?

How many years did you get?
How much time in this joint?
You can lose a lot in a year
He said, That’s beside the point.

One thousand dollars for five years time
Some things come back to haunt
Maybe I didn’t get paid enough, he said
But that’s beside the point.

Get that smirk off your face
It’s not polite to laugh and taunt
Maybe it wasn’t such a good deal
But that’s beside the point.

I did it my own way
Except for landing in this joint
Except for getting all this time
But that’s beside the point.

My mother taught me to be honest
My daddy did the same as well as my aunt
After a period of time, I believed
But that’s beside the point.

God even spoke to me once
But His words I did flaunt
I guess I should have listened
But that’s beside the point.

I guess I had the time of my life
But now the time does not warrant
The price paid is way too high
But that’s beside the point.

I may have time to think about this
About the things that could be that aren’t
Back then I didn’t have the time I have now
But that’s beside the point.
