Beside The Point
by Roger Montgomery ã
I made a stealing in my time
An inmate said in the joint
Its a lot better than working, he said
Do you get my point?
How many years did you get?
How much time in this joint?
You can lose a lot in a year
He said, Thats beside the point.
One thousand dollars for five years time
Some things come back to haunt
Maybe I didnt get paid enough, he said
But thats beside the point.
Get that smirk off your face
Its not polite to laugh and taunt
Maybe it wasnt such a good deal
But thats beside the point.
I did it my own way
Except for landing in this joint
Except for getting all this time
But thats beside the point.
My mother taught me to be honest
My daddy did the same as well as my aunt
After a period of time, I believed
But thats beside the point.
God even spoke to me once
But His words I did flaunt
I guess I should have listened
But thats beside the point.
I guess I had the time of my life
But now the time does not warrant
The price paid is way too high
But thats beside the point.
I may have time to think about this
About the things that could be that arent
Back then I didnt have the time I have now
But thats beside the point.
