Best Advice

a Poem by Roger Montgomery

My dad is no longer living
But here’s something for me to pass on
It has been a help to me since he spoke
Long ago when I was young.

If you want some good advice
Something to base your life upon
Here’s the best advice I’ve ever had
It has never guided me wrong.

What he said was very simple
It makes sense, but it’s not too worn
I’ve never heard it before or since
But you can claim it for your own.

If you don’t do something the first time
You can’t do it the second time, Son
Of all the advice I’ve ever had
This probably ranks Number One.

I’ll never be a drunk without the first drink
Drugs I’m not hooked on
I look life over and decide what I don’t want to be
And celebrate the things I haven’t done.

I’ve based my life on what he said
His advice will live on when I’m gone
It’s free for the taking
Now you can pass it on.
