Friends
by Roger Montgomery ã

There are many types of people
There are many types of trends
Many ways to live your life
Many types of friends.

There are friends that hug you
Some will shake your hands
Take them as they are
They make up your friends.

Some friends like to kiss
Some keep you at arms end
Some light up when they see you
These people you call friends.

Some you have to call up
With others you can just drop in
They are all part of your life
They are your friends.

Some I like better
Some are next of kin
Some I know hardly at all
But they are still friends.

Come and see me they will say
The next time you are in
But I don’t have to make appointments
When I’m visiting my best Friend.

I know there’s a heaven
Where we will be welcomed in
Cause God has to have a place
To put all His friends.

God has created heaven
Where there is no sin
Where we can all be at home
And be together with our Friend.

I’ve been impressed by God’s works
Man’s talents now and then
But some of the things that really impress me
Is the love of some of these friends.

I don’t feel out of place
Like I have now and then
There’s a feeling of welcome
When you’re with this type of friend.

Some may walk you to the door
Some may invite you back again
But I get walked to the car
When I’m visiting with these friends.

There’s a feeling of sadness
When it’s time to leave again
Being waved at till you’re out of sight
Saying good bye to a friend.

Call yourself a success
Believe it now and then
How much money can you make
To buy yourself one close friend.

You may be so poor
A con artist wouldn’t take you in
But you’ve never seen the time
When you’re forsaken by your Friend.

But you’re never really put down
Maybe badly bent or broken in sin
You are never completely down
When you’ve got one close Friend.

When you’ve really messed up
The world is closing in
Who do you want to be with
If it’s not with a Friend.

When your wife and kids hate you
Your dog won’t let you in
Where do you go to
If it’s not to a Friend.

When you’re broke and down
The IRS won’t accept the check you send
Your friendly banker wants twelve co-signers
To loan you a ten.

And you sit in wonderment
How much trouble you’ve gotten in
Just take all your cares and pack them up
And go visit your Friend.

When it comes time to die
You leave this world of sin
God will send His angels for you
Because you’re His friend.

Bring them to my table, Jesus will say
I will serve them then
Pour them a cup of wine
This One’s for you, my friend.

I used to go to my grandmothers
And I knew I was going to be fed again
Love so overflowing it cannot be hid
Now that’s what I call a friend.

My aunts and uncles were glad to see me
Every time I would visit again
They would hold the door open
Always welcome me in.

It didn’t cost me any money
No bribing could have been
Come without money or reason
Hey, we’re your friends.

Sometimes I get too busy to talk to God
I start missing Him about then
But when I return home
He is waiting to take me back in.

He doesn’t put me down
Ask me where I’ve been
He just holds out His hands
And welcomes me back in.

No words of sarcasm
No mention of my sin
I can put them all on Him
And He is still my Friend.

I’ve had people say they love me
And rarely see them again
But other people can’t stay away
Who do you think are my real friends?

I’ve got One Friend that told me
He would come back again
And I have no doubt His words are Truth
I know, He is my Friend.

Jesus has a Book of Life
He has written our names in
Jesus doesn’t call us servants
He calls us His friends.

He is Alpha and Omega
The beginning and the end
He is Lord of Lords and King of Kings
And He is our Friend.

That’s the reason that Jesus went to heaven
He has some building plans
That’s one reason God made heaven
To fill it with His friends.

Sometimes you need an introduction
Sometimes a helping hand
May I introduce you to Jesus Christ
Now here is what I call a Friend.

My mother watched over us as kids
Just like a mother hen
My mother was more than a mother
She was more than just a friend.

My mother rarely said I love you
But it was never an issue then
I never even wondered
I can recognize a friend.

My mother wouldn’t eat sometimes
I remember now and then
Until her kids were fed
Then she would eat again.

When we went fishing
Before daylight back then
Hunting, it didn’t matter why
She would get up and feed us again.

Sometimes the food was short
But we were always fed back then
Somehow it would be just enough
And we would be fed again.

She made sure we were fed
Then she would eat again
Her love went beyond herself
She was more than a friend.

My mother sometimes didn’t eat with us
She fed us first, then
After we were all full and out playing
She would eat again.

She made sure we were fed
And after we were full again
She would eat if anything was left
Have you ever had a friend?

School or fishing or hunting
We never went hungry then
When I get to heaven
I bet she will feed me again.

My mother’s face would light up
As soon as I walked in
How could I ask for more
I knew who was my friend.

Please take your shoes off
Before you track the dirt in
I’ve never heard these words
From my mother or my Friend.

My mother went to be with Jesus
I think about her now and then
I would have loved to have seen
Her welcome home by her Friend.

I couldn’t give my mother
The things of the world then
But now she is in heaven
Where she’ll never be poor again.

My mother was never put out
When I’d visit her again
That’s the way my Father is
He has time for His friends.

Maybe these people look common
Nothing impresses you about them
But their hearts hold the mystery
Thank you God for my friends.

Look without your eyes
Take another look at them
What is their worth
When they are your friends.

Before you criticize anyone
Consider the trouble you can get in
That person may know God
Jesus may be his best Friend.

Common folks are not as common
As they were back then
We need a few more of them
We need a few more friends.

This world was not worthy of them
The Bible says of the people living then
Now God has taken them to heaven
These people He called His friends.

I may see you in the streets
I don’t know just when
But if you’re looking for me
Just call one of my friends.

When you get to heaven
I may drop in
Time will be no problem
But I’ll probably be visiting my friends.

No matter where you go
No matter where you’ve been
There’s no feeling compared
To being loved by a Friend.

Jesus has the Door open
He invites you to come on in
Jesus doesn’t call you servants
He calls you His friends.

Sometimes I don’t call ahead
When I visit with my best Friend
If it’s twelve in the morning, He just smiles
And says Welcome, come on in.

He will always be with me
Down to the very end
He said in the Bible He loves me
And that He is my Friend.

The people I like to be with
Down here with mortal men
Are the ones who always welcome me
Glad to see me again.

We are written Epistles
We are read of all men
Jesus said our love would be manifested
Love shows we’re His friend.

Jesus said whosoever will
May come and be born again
You will never be hungry
When in the home of your Friend.

Things are not so important
They’re passing away but then
Only some things are eternal
Friendship and the love of a Friend.

Jesus gave us life
And He gives life again
He just keeps on giving
After all, He is our friend.

Sometimes Jesus reaches out to you
He offers His outstretched hand
What else would He do
He is our best Friend.

Jesus comes and talks to me
Sometimes His presence comes flooding in
He always cares, He hears my prayers.
He is always my best Friend.

When I die the Bible says
I will live again
Jesus will send His angels
To welcome home His friends.

There are some people who live
Make the world worth living in
But most of them know God
And Jesus as their friend.

Well, Jesus went back to heaven
But He said He’s coming again
So I’m listening for His shout
And I’m watching for my Friend.
