I went down to the construction site
Some of the people had been fired
I knew they needed help real bad
Maybe I could get hired.

I’d heard of the Superintendent
I heard He really cared
He had taken on all sorts of help
Maybe I could get hired.

Some people had decided to quit
And some had just retired
This company was badly in need of help
Maybe I could get hired.

When I got down to the site
People didn’t seem to be working hard
I was starting to feel contempt
Just wait until I get hired.

I think I’ll jump right in
At least I know I’m prepared
I’ll show them how it’s really done
And I haven’t even been hired.

Look at those people standing around
Looks like they’ve lost their desire
They don’t impress me one little bit
And I’m not even hired.

I’m as good as that guy
Look at that one sitting over there
I am working harder than they
And I haven’t even been hired.

I talked to the Supervisor
People didn’t think I would dare
I told Him about His crew
And I’m not even hired.

I wanted the Supervisor to know
And I tried to get these people fired
After all, they’re not like me
Though I’m not even hired.

It didn’t go too well
He would decide who gets fired
He had done all the recruiting
Questioned how I got hired.

Well, it’s been a rough week
And boy, am I tired
I sure have impressed the people
And I’m not even hired.

Where’s the payroll department
I’m going to get my share
They will be proud of me
And I’m not even hired.

I’m at the payroll department now
I’m bound to get a lot, it’s only fair
I sure have earned what I’m getting
And I’m not even hired.

Hey, can you imagine these people
Talk about being unfair
They couldn’t find my name in their book
They said I was never hired.

Well, I will see God about this
He’s sure to play it square
There’s a lot of other people working for Him
And a lot of them was never hired.
